iOS or Android phone software not updating

A software update is the newest version of an app or other program on your mobile phone. When you download and install updates, you get security fixes and performance upgrades.

Having the newest software versions helps keep your information safe and your phone working its best. Other reasons to regularly update the software that’s on your Android device, iPhone or iPad:

• Bug fixes
• New features
• Compatibility issues

When a software update is available for your phone:

• You get an on-screen notification that a software update is available for download. Follow the prompts to update the software.
• Or you can install the update later:
  • Android: Go to Settings > System / Software updates > Check for updates. Follow the on-screen instructions,
  • iPhone / iPad: Go to Settings > General > Software Update > Download and Install. Follow the on-screen instructions.

Is your iOS software update not updating? Did your Android software update fail and you can’t update your phone? These could be reasons:

• Low battery - Enough battery charge is needed to do a software update. Your device should notify you if it’s time to connect a charger.
• Low storage space - Your device needs enough free space to install the software update. If you see a notification saying you don't have enough space, delete some files (e.g., emails, photos, etc.) or apps. Then proceed.
• Network or signal issues - When downloading and installing a software update:
• You must have a stable connection to our network or to a Wi-Fi network.
  • You can’t download software updates while roaming outside the Verizon network.
  • Some devices require you to have at least some signal on the Verizon network, even if the software update is being downloaded over Wi-Fi.
• Current software version is too old - If the software version on your phone hasn't been updated in a long time (e.g., you activated an old device), you may not be able to update software over the Verizon network or Wi-Fi. If so , use our Software Upgrade Assistant or contact the device manufacturer for help.
