Happy National Engineers Week!
In case you didn’t know, it’s National Engineers Week, and we’re so grateful to our Test Force and their consistent arduous work. In an Inside Verizon article posted today, Chief Network Officer, Lynn Cox, shared her gratitude for our engineers and invited the V Team to recognize an engineer they appreciate in the comments section. The panel’s Black History Month focus
February is Black History Month, and we wanted this panel to highlight some of the incredible black engineers that help make up our company. This of course aligns perfectly with our Employee Resource Group Black Originators Leaders and Doers (BOLD)’s theme for this year's celebrations, “BOLDer Steps Together: Tomorrow is Built Today.” And National Engineer Week’s theme of celebrating today’s achievements and paving the way for a brighter and more diverse future in engineering.
The panelists included LaTanya Buggs, Vice President of Network and Field Operations; Abby Knowles, Vice President of Information and Technology; and Tyrone Graves, Associate Director of Network Engineering. The panelists addressed the V Team community but also future V Teamers. Students from five NAF academies joined us virtually from North Carolina. NAF is a partner of Citizen Verizon, our responsible business plan, and offers high school students across the country enriching opportunities to develop their career aspirations and skills.
LaTanya, Tyrone and Abby shared insights that included their journey toward a path in engineering, how their paths led to Verizon, specifics about their current roles amongst other questions.
The conversation was also heavily focused on the various opportunities students can explore within an engineering and technology career, as well as the role that younger generations will have in influencing and building a future of innovation.
The panelists also took some time to offer advice to younger generations interested in a career in Engineering and stressed the need for diverse talent. They also shared black engineers that have inspired them throughout their lives.
