On today’s episode of Up To Speed, we meet Amber Nakamura, a senior account manager who joined Verizon three years ago and works on the B2B team in Aurora, Colorado.

In 2013, Amber’s father passed away, and to support her family, she felt she had no choice but to drop out of school. She took on four jobs to make ends meet, working about 20 hours a day. During that time, she was also in an abusive relationship. “That’s when I woke up in bed,” she said, “I didn’t like the way I was living anymore.” After a lengthy legal process, Amber decided she needed a fresh start. That's when she packed up her car and moved to Colorado.

After her move, Amber joined the Verizon retail team. Her general manager at the time nominated her for a development program for emerging leaders, providing her with lots of new opportunities. She also utilized Verizon’s Tuition Assistance Program, helping her earn a degree in project management.

Amber credited Verizon for giving her the tools to change her life for the better.
