One of my favorite quotes is from Dr. Seuss’s “Oh, The Places You’ll Go!” In it he says, “You have brains in your head. You have feet in your shoes. You can steer yourself, any direction you choose. You're on your own. And you know what you know. And YOU are the one who'll decide where to go.”
It may seem silly to quote a book from childhood, but the advice is true and clear. We are all the navigators of our lives, including our careers, and though the road may have its curves and detours, it’s never too late to keep on our journey.
We spoke to Diana Scudder, a VP in our Network and Field Operations group in Denver, CO, and asked what advice she would share for someone on a path to a career in technology. This is what she shared:
Be your authentic self. You don’t have to be an expert at every single item on the job description. You bring a unique perspective, ideas and thoughts to the table.
Ask questions and practice continuous, curious learning.
You can achieve anything you put your mind to. Set a goal and work toward it. This starts with delivering results in your current role.
Don’t be afraid to take risks and push yourself outside your comfort zone. Try new roles in different areas. Diversify your knowledge and expertise.
Own your career; nobody will own it for you. Make sure your leadership team is aware of your goals and aspirations. Remember that they can’t read your mind. Then, share your achievements and results. Especially, on your resume and during interviews. Don’t be afraid to toot your own horn.
