If there is one area of our lives that most — if not all — of us struggle with, it’s distraction. In fact, the ability to stay focused may be the most important life skill of our time.

I interviewed researcher and New York Times bestselling author Nir Eyal to discuss his book “Indistractible - How to Control Your Attention and Choose Your Life” to learn more about the reasons why we so often choose to be distracted.

Nir points out that we tend to associate distraction with our phones and screen time, but technically it is anything that pulls us away from our intended goal. Our minds have ways of playing tricks on ourselves in order to keep us comfortable and pain-free.

For example, we might tell ourselves that doing dishes or exercising is important — and those activities can be good goals we set at certain points in our day — but they also can serve as distractions that keep us from the work we really should be doing.
