Fifty years ago, Earth Day was the spark that ignited a global movement to protect the environment. Five decades later, we continue to ask, “What can we do to keep the Earth beautiful?”

Solutions Specialist Jana Hurst of Schererville, IN, and her son, Nathan, built a greenhouse and started a garden. A great way for the family to practice math and science at home.

Ali Niang, a Client Services Management Specialist in Cary, NC, and his son not only plant flowers at home, Ali’s non-profit is pollinating goodness by mailing seeds to friends and family, all to encourage others to live greener lives.

Go dark to go green

Sergio Hernandez, an Account Manager in Indirect District Sales in Woodland Hills, CA, his wife Anna Hernandez (also a V Teamer) and their son, Sergio Jr., all unplug for an hour to reduce energy use, reconnect with one another and give the planet a break.

Let’s follow Sergio’s example and honor the 50th anniversary of Earth Day by going not only green but “dark” green. Take 50 minutes to turn off your lights, devices, screens and anything else with a switch.

Be a green volunteer; the forest will thank you

Of course when you plug back in, find some time to give back in a green way by checking out our volunteer portal. One of our social responsibility pillars happens to be Climate Protection, and we’ve got all kinds of virtual volunteer opportunities to tackle at home as a family, including a volunteer activity to count penguins!

Here’s another great reason to volunteer. The Green Team is planting a tree for every employee who signs up for one of their virtual volunteer opportunities this month. Visit the communities page in the volunteer portal and click on the Verizon Green Team community to take action.

A-maize-ing, sustainable phone accessories

Verizon’s commitment to go carbon neutral by 2035 starts with little changes like using 100% recyclable paper packaging. We’re also offering the latest sustainable phone accessories, including the 100% biodegradable corn-based Incipio Organicore phone case, used by our very own Up To Speed Live host Jeremy Godwin. Organicore is made of 100% compostable materials that naturally biodegrade, reducing landfill waste.

Pollution levels drop

One silver lining to our world’s current situation: The global drop in pollution. Atmospheric nitrogen dioxide levels in Paris are down nearly 55%, while levels in Delhi dropped a whopping 71%.

It’s been decades since our planet could breathe this well. It’s a great reminder that our collective actions can make a huge impact on our world.
