This year, Verizon was among 686 companies to earn a 100% score on the Corporate Equality Index (CEI), demonstrating concrete steps to ensure equality for Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender and Queer (LGBTQ+) workers and their families through comprehensive policies, benefits and practices.

For the 2020 CEI, the Human Rights Campaign (HRC) Foundation ranked over 1,000 companies across various industries on their commitment to LGBTQ+ equality and inclusion, based on three key pillars:

  • Non-discrimination policies across business entities.
  • Equitable benefits for LGBTQ+ workers and their families.
  • Supporting an inclusive culture and corporate social responsibility.

Here are a few reasons we were named one of the best places to work for LGBTQ+ Equality in this year’s CEI.

1. Our Employee Resource Groups (ERG) cultivate an inclusive workplace for all.

Our ERGs addresses the needs and concerns of our LGBTQ+ V Teamers while fostering a work environment where everyone is treated with respect and dignity.

2. We launched a national Pride campaign in 2019.

In 2019, we launched Connected by Pride, the second national Pride campaign to raise awareness of our presence and support for the LGBTQ+ community. We also proudly partnered with PFLAG, the nation’s first and largest organization for LGBTQ+ people, their families and allies.

As part of our partnership with PFLAG, we launched a commercial, Love Calls Back, showing parents uniting with their LGBTQ children and sharing a message of love and acceptance.

3. We encourage V Teamers to bring their authentic selves to work.

We are committed to fostering a safe and inclusive workplace where all V Teamers can be their authentic selves. Just ask Kimmah D., who shared her experience of how Verizon has empowered her to embrace her true self from day one.

My partner and I got married in 2011 and I was able to share the joy with my teammates. When my daughter was on her way, my team threw me a baby shower and celebrated as if nothing were different about our situations.

4. Our partnerships further show our support.

We continued our support to Out and Equal by providing a $50,000 grant to support the Workplace Summit and programs to help advance LGBTQ+ inclusion and equality. Our support helps build awareness about LGBTQ+ inclusion and Out and Equal’s work to help build inclusive workplaces.

We continued our support to SMYAL (Supporting and Mentoring Youth Advocates and Leaders) in Washington, DC, donating $40,000 to support programs that prevent dating violence, improve services and prevent homelessness among LGBTQ+ youth.

5. We’re committed to LGBTQ+ equality across the board.

The CEI serves as a road map for businesses to stay on top of the evolving field of policies, practices and benefits for LGBTQ+ employees. Our participation not only shines a light on the progress we’ve made but also helps us continue improving to show our commitment to LGBTQ+ equality, within the company, with our customers and in our communities.
