For this installment of the #AskaRecruiter series, we’re going to discuss some of the best ways to share your skills and experience with a recruiter. Now that you’ve applied for the opportunity, gotten the job interview, it’s time to prepare. Here’s some of our best advice to help you stand out from the pack:

Preparation is key. As you should for any interview, come to your scheduled meeting or phone call well prepared. Do your research on Verizon and its business priorities and values, practice your elevator pitch and consider responses to possible questions beforehand practicing with the STAR (situation, task, action, result) method. The clearer you show your skills, your ability to deliver results and drive positive outcomes, the easier it is for a recruiter to relay that information to the hiring manager. Check out some of our other favorite preparation tips for additional assistance.

Why do you want the job? Positively explain why you want to work at Verizon, why you are searching for a new job and explain how you benefited from past experiences. Have three to five key selling points with concise examples that demonstrate why you’re the best candidate for the position.

Be transparent. Don’t hold back when discussing your strengths, but don’t exaggerate skills you don’t actually have as you might be asked to explain them. Read the job description to understand the skills and experience the hiring manager is seeking. Check online resources for common interview questions related to the position and skills.

Ask questions. You want your next position to be the best fit for you and the company you’re seeking employment with. This is the time to ask the recruiter questions so you can get more insight into how the role fits with your career goals. Having thoughtful questions prepared can also confirm you did your research on the company, the job and the industry.

Your recruiter reached out because they saw your skills are what we need for an open position. Talking to them openly can build a relationship that will help both of you fulfill a need.
