Senators Ron Wyden (D-OR) and Pat Toomey (R-Pa.) today (Wednesday, June 26, 2013) introduced the Wireless Tax Fairness Act of 2013.  The Senate legislation is similar to a House version introduced earlier this month by Reps. Zoe Lofgren (D-CA) and Trent Franks (R-AZ) of the House Judiciary Committee. The following statement should be attributed to Peter Davidson, Verizon senior vice president, federal government affairs:

America’s consumers continue to live under the threat of new discriminatory taxes on their wireless services. With an increasing number of Americans using mobile devices as their sole means of accessing the Internet, studies have shown these tax measures are regressive and do nothing more than harm those Americans most in need of wireless services.

“The Wireless Tax Fairness Act would protect consumers from any new, discriminatory taxes on wireless services. This broadly bipartisan legislation would impose a 5-year “time-out” on new targeted state or local taxes on wireless services or providers.

“Verizon commends Senators Wyden and Toomey and Representatives Lofgren and Franks for taking a proactive and forward-looking approach to sound tax policy.  We look forward to working with this bipartisan group and other leaders in the Senate and House to protect consumers, and stimulate today’s mobile economy.”
