The Indochinese-American Council of Philadelphia recently received a $10,000 grant from the Verizon Foundation to extend afterschool program activities designed to educate children in STEM (science, technology, engineering and math). This includes supporting IAC’s implementation of City Skies, a program of the Franklin Institute, funded NASA to bring astronomy into the classroom. The first workshop was held on Friday, March 15 at James Logan Elementary School where students learned how to assemble a telescope and then use the instruments to observe the sky.
The $10,000 grant will provide 130 children with STEM education through project-based learning, workshops and museum events. In addition to James Logan, the program also will include St. Helena-Incarnation and Hill Freedman schools in Philadelphia and will explore STEM topics for three hours a week, and eight hours a week this summer. Students will present their findings in a final project at the culmination of the program.
