BURLINGTON -- The Vermont Public Service Board today agreed to support Verizon's application to the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) seeking approval to provide long-distance service in the state. The company submitted the application to the board for review Aug. 7, 2001. Verizon will submit its application to the FCC very soon. The commission will then have 90 days to decide on Verizon's request. The following response should be attributed to Louise McCarren, president of Verizon Vermont.
"In the states where Verizon offers long-distance service, customers are reaping the benefits of more choices and are saving on their phone bills. Today's recommendation by the board is a welcome decision for Vermont consumers and businesses, bringing them a step closer to the day when they can experience the benefits of competition that their neighbors in Massachusetts and New York already enjoy. The board's support will be a critical factor as Verizon seeks federal approval to offer long distance in Vermont. We've demonstrated that the local telecommunications market here is irreversibly open to competition and we're confident that the FCC will agree."
