BACKGROUND -- President George W. Bush today called the aggressive deployment of broadband crucial to the U.S. economy and the high-tech sector. The president said he was confident that Federal Communications Commission Chairman Michael Powell and the FCC commissioners would adopt the right policies to aggressively promote the deployment of broadband. The following statement should be attributed to Michael Boland, senior vice president-Legislative Affairs for Verizon.

"There's a growing demand for a greater supply of broadband. Today the president joined that chorus and we're thrilled. We, too, have confidence that Michael Powell and the FCC commissioners will adopt the right policies to make billion dollar investments in broadband make sense again. The House has spoken, the president has spoken, and now it's time for the Senate to act."
