WILMINGTON, Del. -- Verizon customers located along U.S. Route 202 in north Wilmington soon will have more reliable phone service as the result of a $4 million investment the company is making to upgrade and expand the capacity of its telecommunications network.

Verizon is installing new fiber-optic and copper cables, associated electronic equipment and conduit in connection with the reconstruction of Route 202 from I-95 to north of Route 141 in Fairfax.

The cables can carry higher volumes of voice and data traffic and will allow businesses to transmit data at very high speeds. The new facilities also will accommodate future growth to meet the demands of local and long-distance calling as well as Internet access. The company currently estimates that 15,000 telecommunications circuits will be relocated.

Verizon is working closely with the Delaware Department of Transportation, other agencies and contractors to avoid service and traffic disruptions while the work is underway. The cable relocation project began in February and is expected to be completed late next year. The Route 202 reconstruction is scheduled for completion by 2007.

In addition to the Route 202 project, Verizon continues to install fiber-optic cable and other advanced telecommunications equipment throughout Delaware.

"Because of Verizon's investment in Delaware, an advanced broadband, fiber-optic network now serves every corner of the state - from Rockland to Rehoboth," said Joshua W. Martin III, president of Verizon Delaware. "The ability to build, enhance and maintain complex networks is at the very heart of our business. We have played a key role in Delaware's economic development for more than a century, and we intend be a part of Delaware's telecommunications future in the 21st century and beyond."

Martin said Verizon's commitment to improve Delaware's telecommunications infrastructure includes:

  • Investment of more than $500 million in the company's Delaware network since 1995.

  • Fiber deployment in the state, which increased by 19 percent from 97,000 fiber miles at the end of 2000 to 115,770 fiber miles at the end of 2001.

  • Deployment of 80 SONET (synchronous optical network) rings in its Delaware network in 2001, bringing the total to 355. SONET rings provide multiple routes for high-speed voice and data services and are self-healing, automatically rerouting telecommunications transmissions in the event of a service disruption.

"Verizon is the only telecommunications company committed to significant investment in Delaware's future," Martin said. "Delaware's network serves our customers and is open to our competitors. We welcome competition in the local marketplace, and any company that sincerely wants to compete here can do so."
