CHARLESTON, W.Va. - Verizon has selected H. Stan Cavendish to become president of Verizon West Virginia, succeeding Gale Y. Given, who has been named president of Verizon's five-state Great Lakes region.

Cavendish, who most recently was executive director-corporate and external relations, assumes oversight for Verizon's operations, external affairs and regulatory and financial matters in West Virginia. Verizon serves approximately 840,000 phone lines in the Mountain State.

"Gale has led Verizon through several critical achievements over the past three years, including state and federal approval of our long-distance application for West Virginia," said Colleen A. McCloskey, Verizon senior vice president-state public policy and external affairs. "Stan will build on that success. His experience and knowledge of the telecommunications industry and West Virginia will guide our business in a time of great competition and technological change."

A native of Ripley, Cavendish began his telecommunications career in 1976 at C&P Telephone of West Virginia, where he has held a number of positions in the regulatory and public relations groups. Prior to his telecommunications career, Cavendish edited newspapers in Buckhannon and Weston.

Cavendish earned a bachelor's degree in English from West Virginia University and completed management development programs at the University of Richmond, Duke University and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He is vice chairman of the West Virginia Workforce Investment Council and serves on the boards of Advantage Valley, the Software Valley Foundation, the Charleston-area Salvation Army and the West Virginia Research League. Cavendish also chairs the Visiting Committee of the College of Education at WVU.

Cavendish and his wife, Carolyn, have two children and live in Charleston.
