NEW YORK - The Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers (SHPE) has named Verizon as Company of the Year for championing the progress of Hispanics in science and technology. The award comes at a time when highly skilled engineers are helping Verizon lead the way in the emerging broadband industry.

Eduardo Menascé, Verizon president-Enterprise Solutions Group, accepted the award on behalf of the company at SHPE's annual conference last week in Chicago. The engineering society selected Verizon for the honor from more than 150 eligible companies.

"Verizon has supported our efforts in many ways," said SHPE President Diana Gomez. "It provides expertise, enthusiasm and momentum for many of our initiatives. Its actions have proven that, as a company, Verizon is committed to strengthening the role of Hispanics in science and technology, and this commitment goes beyond mere financial support."

Verizon, which employs a diverse work force, has recruited engineers from SHPE's membership for the past five years. The company recently announced network expansions and upgrades to bring broadband services to the mass market, and will continue to recruit people with "top-notch engineering skills," Menascé told SHPE members in accepting the Company of the Year award.

"As a company whose focus is technology, Verizon needs the best and the brightest. Our employees need to be able to build, sell, and maintain the most powerful communications networks in the world," Menascé said.

With a network of professional and student chapters throughout the United States, SHPE promotes the development of Hispanics in engineering, science and other technical professions. Verizon has financially supported SHPE's scholarship programs and higher-education initiatives and has conducted career workshops for SHPE members throughout the United States.
