WASHINGTON, D.C. - Today, the U.S. Solicitor General (The U.S. Department of Justice) said he will not appeal the decision by the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit that voided many of the Federal Communications Commission's so-called "network unbundling" rules. The decision is set to take effect on June 15. The following response should be attributed to Tom Tauke, executive vice president - public affairs and communications for Verizon.
"We applaud the Bush Administration for making a tough call today, but one that will bring the benefits to consumers of stepped-up investment in advanced telecommunications networks by competing providers.
"When faced with a choice between reliance on market forces and government mandates, the administration has placed its faith in market forces. Verizon looks forward to working with the administration, the FCC and the industry to launch a new era in telecommunications and reassert our leadership in the world.
"Consumers are the drivers in today's telecommunications marketplace. Verizon stands ready to negotiate commercial agreements with our wholesale customers as quickly as possible and to compete in serving consumers and business by providing value backed by great service and innovation."
