INDIANAPOLIS - Nine Indiana students have won college scholarships from the Verizon Foundation, the philanthropic arm of Verizon Communications. Each scholarship is $5,000 per year, renewable for three years, for a maximum award of $20,000.
The winners are among 260 students nationwide who received a scholarship this year through the company's program for employees' children.
The recipients are: Jennifer Hagen of Noblesville, daughter of Tracy Hagen-Smith, who plans to study child psychology at Indiana University-Bloomington; Amy Maple of Batesville, daughter of David Maple, who plans to study athletic training and physical therapy at the University of Indianapolis; Mandy Nowling of Seymour, daughter of Mark Nowling, who plans to study telecommunications at Ball State University; Heather Roszelle of Greensburg, daughter of Mark Roszelle, who plans to study deaf education at Ball State University; John Salway of Fort Wayne, son of Thomas Salway, who plans to study exercise science at Indiana-Purdue Fort Wayne; Abby Skinner of Churubusco, daughter of Arlan Skinner, who plans to study nursing at University of Saint Francis; Kara Vyain of Fort Wayne, daughter of Linda Vyain, who plans to study liberal arts; Lauren Wager of Woodburn, daughter of Mark Wager, who plans to study sports medicine at Florida Gulf Coast University; and Amber Wright of Hanna, daughter of Eric Wright, plans to study dental hygiene at Indiana University - South Bend.
Verizon annually awards scholarships to the children of employees as part of the company's commitment to work force development, one of the Verizon Foundation's core funding priorities. This fall, a total of 1,025 students who received scholarships through the company program will attend colleges and universities nationwide.
"Verizon's long-standing commitment to invest in the development of a skilled work force starts with the children of our employees," said Lori Macklin, Verizon assistant vice president of regulatory and governmental affairs for Indiana. "We congratulate our scholarship winners and wish them success in the coming years."
Verizon Foundation awarded the scholarships in partnership with Scholarship America, a nonprofit, private-sector scholarship and educational support organization.
In 2003, the foundation awarded more than 21,000 grants totaling about $70 million to charitable and nonprofit agencies that focus on improving basic and computer literacy, enriching communities through technology, and creating a skilled work force. The foundation uses its resources in the United States and abroad to develop partnerships in technology and connect them with organizations serving the needs of diverse communities, people with disabilities, victims of domestic violence, and the economically and socially disadvantaged.
