NEW CASTLE, Pa. - A routine service call was anything but routine for Verizon service technician Randy Scialabba, whose quick thinking saved a woman and baby from a burning row house here. In recognition of his heroics, Verizon today presented Scialabba with the Verizon Heroes Award, one of the company's most prestigious honors for heroism.
"Employees like Randy epitomize the essence of this award," said Amy McDevitt, president of Verizon's Mid-Atlantic region, who presented the medal to Scialabba today during a breakfast ceremony at his work location. "Randy's heroic efforts demonstrate his selfless commitment to others, his community and Verizon. He is well-deserving of this great honor."
Last fall, Scialabba responded to a repair call at a row house on Neshannock Boulevard. When he arrived, he discovered a fire, fueled by a pile of wood and garbage, burning out of control in front of the home's front door.
Scialabba immediately called 911 and started knocking on adjacent doors to alert residents. Disregarding his own safety, he tried kicking the flaming materials away from the door but was repelled by the intense heat.
Scialabba then saw a woman and baby at a second-floor bedroom window of the row house. He instructed her to remain calm, to stay where she was and to place a wet cloth along the bottom of the bedroom door to prevent smoke from entering. He continued to assure the woman that help was on the way. Firefighters arrived shortly thereafter and extinguished the flames.
The bronze Verizon Heroes Award, one of the highest awards for heroism granted by Verizon, is awarded to a Verizon employee who risks his or her own safety in saving the life of another person. The other Verizon Heroes Awards include the gold and silver medals, the citation of meritorious service and a certificate of recognition.
