PHILADELPHIA - Verizon has appointed William B. Petersen vice president and general counsel for the company's operations in Pennsylvania and Delaware. Petersen replaces Julia Ann Conover, who retired in July.

In his new position, Petersen is responsible for regulatory, litigation and corporate legal matters for Verizon Pennsylvania and Verizon Delaware. In his previous position, he served as an assistant general counsel and was responsible for litigating wholesale matters throughout Verizon's national service area.

Petersen, a native of New York, is a graduate of the University of Pennsylvania Law School, where he was editor-in-chief of that school's Law Review. After graduation, he served as a law clerk for Judge George C. Pratt of the 2nd U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals.

Prior to joining the Verizon legal department, Petersen was a member of the Philadelphia law firm of Hangley, Aronchick, Segal & Pudlin. He has served as an assistant United States attorney in the Eastern District of Pennsylvania, and was also associated with the Washington, D.C., law firm of Kellogg, Huber, Hansen, Todd, Evans & Figel.

Petersen resides in Gladwyne, Pa., with his wife, Anna Marie, and son, Matthew.
