DALLAS - Americans find ways to treat their pets year-round. Last year alone, the nation's pet owners spent $36.3 billion on pet food, pet supplies, veterinary visits, medicines, live animals and services, according to the American Pet Products Manufacturers Association. But during the dog days of summer, dog owners seem particularly inclined to unleash their spending, and often turn to Verizon Yellow Pages to do so.

"We've got a lot of dog and general pet-related businesses in the Verizon Yellow Pages -- vets, groomers, walkers, sitters, trainers, kennels, pet stores, you name it," said Mary De La Garza, director, Verizon Information Services. "And a lot of them tell us that the calls they get from their Yellow Pages ads pick up significantly in the summer."

Summer vacations mean more dogs are boarded in June, July and August than the rest of the year, according to Sandra Kolb, president, Bethayers Kennel. Summer is also a popular time to introduce a new dog into a family, according to Kolb.

"The kids are home. They've got more time to devote to learning how to take care of a dog," she said.

De La Garza added: "From fun stuff like buying new toys to debut in the dog park to serious matters like calling a vet to treat dehydration, dog owners are turning to the Verizon Yellow Pages more and more this summer. It just might be a dog-lover's best friend."

According to a 2005 Knowledge Networks/SRI study, the "Veterinarian" yellow pages heading is the 14th-most frequently referenced yellow pages heading, generating more than 172 million look-ups annually.

Verizon Yellow Pages has more than 22 million pet-related listings in its phone books nationwide. Some of the most referenced pet-related categories in the Verizon Yellow Pages are: Veterinarians, Dog Grooming, Pet Sitting Services, and Dog & Cat Training.
