NEWARK, N.J. -- With the installation of a state-of-art digital switch in
Haledon, Bell Atlantic's telecommunications network is now 100 percent
digitally switched throughout New Jersey. Digital switching means
greater reliability for New Jersey customers .

All 214 of Bell Atlantic's switches in the state have been upgraded as we
promised to do under Opportunity New Jersey, a commitment made by
Bell Atlantic to deploy an advanced infrastructure in the state.

"I am very proud to tell you that we are living up to our promise to
modernize our state's infrastructure. This is yet one more example of how
we continue to fulfill our commitment to better serve our customers in a
competitive environment," said William M. Freeman, president and
CEO of Bell Atlantic-New Jersey. "A modern telecommunications
network is an important element in New Jersey's information economy.
This is a major milestone for the state and Bell Atlantic."

Digital switching provides Bell Atlantic customers with more reliable and
dependable telephone service. In addition, digital switches route calls
over the company's network more efficiently, by transmitting data
separately from voice calls.

Bell Atlantic has invested nearly $2 billion in New Jersey over the last two
years. Digital switches, high-speed data switches and high-tech signaling
systems now connect Bell Atlantic customers throughout the Garden State
via more than 1.2 million miles of fiber-optic cable, the largest
deployment of fiber per thousand access lines in the country.

Bell Atlantic is at the forefront of the new communications and information
industry. With more than 43 million telephone access lines and more than 10
million wireless customers worldwide, Bell Atlantic companies are premier
providers of advanced wireline voice and data services, market leaders in
wireless services and the world's largest publishers of directory information. Bell
Atlantic companies are also among the world's largest investors in high-growth
global communications markets, with operations and investments in 23 countries.
