BUFFALO, N.Y. -- Bell Atlantic has received a Distinguished Community Leader Award from the Western New York chapter of the National Conference for Community and Justice.
The organization cited Bell Atlantic for its philanthropic support of technology projects in the Buffalo area aimed at helping to bridge the so- called "digital divide," as well as the company's efforts to promote diversity within its work force.
"Coming from an organization like the NCCJ , this award is especially meaningful," said Maureen Rasp-Glose, Bell Atlantic community affairs manager in Western New York. She accepted the award during the organization's 2000 Brother/Sisterhood Awards program Jan. 20 at the Hyatt Regency-Buffalo. The organization also recognized a number of individuals and a non-profit agency at the event.
Co-chairs Catherine Schweitzer and U.S. Magistrate Judge Hugh Scott cited the Bell Atlantic Foundation's investment in technology projects for organizations such as the Friends to the Elderly, the Hispanic Conference, Juneteenth and the King Urban Life Center. They also noted Bell Atlantic's leadership in promoting diversity in the workplace through its Western Area Diversity Council, the company's active participation in minority job fairs and seminars, and its outreach programs to Buffalo's minority communities.
The National Conference for Community and Justice is a human relations agency dedicated to combating bias, bigotry and racism in the United States. It promotes understanding and respect among all races, religions and cultures through advocacy, conflict resolution and education.
The Bell Atlantic Foundation supports a variety of projects domestically and internationally, with an emphasis on new technology applications in education, health and human services, the arts and humanities, and civic development in the communities served by Bell Atlantic.
