NEW YORK - James J. Jones of Glendale, Queens, N.Y., has been awarded one of the company's highest employee honors, the Leaders in Excellence Award.

Jones, special representative-Bell Atlantic General Business Sales, is being honored for his dedication and commitment to the Sacred Heart Homeless Shelter in Glendale. Jones along with his friend, the late Harold Brown, founded the shelter in 1983 as a smaller alternative to other city shelters.

The Sacred Heart Homeless shelter, which is housed in the basement of Sacred Heart Church and run by Jones, is open five days a week. The shelter provides three meals a day and a place to sleep for up to10 guests, thanks to Jones, Virginia Brown, who is the widow of Harold Brown, and some 200 volunteers.

The Bell Atlantic Leaders in Excellence Award is presented annually to individual employees and employee teams who have demonstrated a devotion to quality, and a commitment to customers or an outstanding dedication to community service.

"Our Leaders in Excellence champions set high standards, and take responsibility to bring about lasting improvements," said Ivan Seidenberg, Bell Atlantic chairman and CEO. "Their initiative and hard work is at the heart of quality, and helps create a workplace that is dedicated to excellence and continuous improvement."

Jones is one of 60 individuals honored recently at area celebrations hosted by Bell Atlantic's senior executives. Leaders in Excellence honorees were selected from more than 1,428 nominations submitted, representing nearly 9,000 employees.

In addition to running the Sacred Heart Homeless Shelter, Jones is an active board member of the Partnership for the Homeless. He has assisted in the creation of some six other shelters and food programs throughout the area.
