BACKGROUND -- Congressman Bob Goodlatte (R-VA) and
Congressman Rick Boucher (D-VA) introduced legislation today that
would encourage openness, competition, and consumer access to
broadband Internet technology. The following response should be
attributed to Tom Tauke, senior vice president for Government Relations
at Bell Atlantic.

Bell Atlantic supports the bills introduced by Representatives Bob
Goodlatte and Rick Boucher today.

As AT&T consolidates its hold on the cable industry, it is important that
the Congress review the policies governing the deployment of broadband
services.

Consumers benefit from policies that ensure that all consumers have
access to higher quality, faster services and more choices in the
marketplace.
