NEW YORK - Mom is number one. At least that's according to Bell Atlantic customers who once again are expected to make this Mother's Day the busiest Sunday of the year on the Bell Atlantic network.

On Mother's Day last year, the number of calls placed over the Bell Atlantic network jumped to over 361 million - an increase of 15 percent over the 315 million calls on a normal Sunday. A similar increase is expected this year.

"We normally see the volume of calls on our network drop considerably once the business week ends, but we have to make sure we're ready for Mother's Day," said John Bell, Bell Atlantic operations vice president-network operations.

"Our network of over 5.6 million miles of fiber optics and 2,644 central office switching centers is prepared to keep our customers in touch with their mothers," Bell added.

Bell Atlantic also will have additional operators on duty to help customers who need assistance making calls or finding phone numbers. Requests for operator-assisted calls increase by about 30 percent on Mother's Day and many of those calls are made collect.

Calls to Bell Atlantic's National 4-1-1 Directory Assistance service - which allows callers to dial 4-1-1 and obtain any phone number in the country - also increase in the days leading up to Mother's Day. The increase comes as sons and daughters search for florists, gift shops and retail outlets located near their mothers.

Bell Atlantic is at the forefront of the new communications and information industry. With more than 44 million telephone access lines and more than 20 million wireless customers worldwide, Bell Atlantic companies are premier providers of advanced wireline voice and data services, market leaders in wireless services and the world's largest publishers of directory information. Bell Atlantic companies are also among the world's largest investors in high-growth global communications markets, with operations and investments in 23 countries.
