DALLAS - GTE today was named one of the "100 Best Companies for Working Mothers" by Working Mother magazine.
To earn the award, GTE was rated against more than 200 other companies on six criteria: pay; opportunity for women to advance; child-care assistance; flexible-work arrangements, work/life programs and other family-friendly benefits.
"Some of the most prestigious companies in America vie for a place on this coveted 100 best list, and we are thrilled that GTE's commitment to working parents has been recognized," said J. Randall MacDonald, GTE executive vice president - human resources and administration.
"Almost half of GTE's nationwide workforce are women, many of them mothers, balancing family concerns with full-time jobs," MacDonald said. "In order to attract and retain these valuable employees, we are committed to implement and maintain state-of-the-art policies, practices and programs to address the needs of working parents."
This is GTE's first year on the list, which has been published annually since 1986. To be considered for the award, companies submit detailed formal applications to the magazine, which ranks the winners alphabetically rather than numerically. All 100 companies will be featured in Working Mother's October issue.
GTE's application highlighted a variety of innovative programs designed to balance work and life issues. Highlights included:
With revenues of more than $23 billion in 1997, GTE is one of the world's largest telecommunications companies and a leading provider of integrated telecommunications services.
