DALLAS - GTE today was named one of the "100 Best Companies for Working Mothers" by Working Mother magazine.
To earn the award, GTE was rated against more than 200 other companies on six criteria: pay; opportunity for women to advance; child-care assistance; flexible-work arrangements, work/life programs and other family-friendly benefits.

"Some of the most prestigious companies in America vie for a place on this coveted 100 best list, and we are thrilled that GTE's commitment to working parents has been recognized," said J. Randall MacDonald, GTE executive vice president - human resources and administration.

"Almost half of GTE's nationwide workforce are women, many of them mothers, balancing family concerns with full-time jobs," MacDonald said. "In order to attract and retain these valuable employees, we are committed to implement and maintain state-of-the-art policies, practices and programs to address the needs of working parents."

This is GTE's first year on the list, which has been published annually since 1986. To be considered for the award, companies submit detailed formal applications to the magazine, which ranks the winners alphabetically rather than numerically. All 100 companies will be featured in Working Mother's October issue.

GTE's application highlighted a variety of innovative programs designed to balance work and life issues. Highlights included:

  • Nearly 40 percent of GTE's professional positions are filled by women.

  • Flexible work arrangements such as job-sharing, part-time positions, telecommuting, alternative work schedules and flex time.

  • Financial planning programs to assist employees in managing financial decisions during critical life events such as at a time of loss.

  • External recognition for providing one of the best benefits programs in the United States for health and welfare. Both CBS News and the Washington Business Group on Health have recognized GTE nationally in this area.

  • Innovative child-care arrangements including an upcoming near-site child-development center in Atlanta for GTE Wireless employees, as well as discounts to other child-care facilities across the country.

  • Benefits such as adoption assistance (GTE provides up to $3,000 toward the cost of adopting a child), personal lines of insurance and long-term care insurance.

  • A substantial philanthropic program concentrated on supporting math and science education. In 1997 alone, the GTE Foundation donated more than $16 million toward education. GTE also has donated $3.3 million to educational institutions via the matching gifts to education program.

With revenues of more than $23 billion in 1997, GTE is one of the world's largest telecommunications companies and a leading provider of integrated telecommunications services.
