CAMBRIDGE, Mass. - BBN Technologies will receive the Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers' (IEEE) Corporate Innovation Recognition at an awards ceremony at the Pierre Hotel in New York City on September 27, 1999. The IEEE Corporate Innovation Recognition was established in 1985 and is awarded for outstanding and exemplary contributions by an industrial entity, governmental or academic organization, or other corporate body. BBN Technologies, a unit of GTE Corp., has earned this award "For pioneering contributions to computer networking technology through the development of the first packet switches, the ARPANET Interface Message Processor (IMP), and Terminal Interface Message Processor (TIP)."
In 1969, when BBN Technologies deployed the ARPANET (the precursor to today's Internet) the notion of breaking messages into smaller pieces, or packets, for transmission and reassembling them at their destination point was revolutionary. Notable players in the communications industry were skeptical that this technology would work. BBN proved that packetizing data was not only possible but that it could be applied to high-speed networks transmitting messages across varied routes to dispersed destinations-the concept underlying today's Internet.
