Verizon recently deployed more than 30,000 terrestrial and submarine miles of 100G technology to its Asia-Pacific network, including Japan, Singapore and Hong Kong. 100G consists of advanced fiber optic technology that allows 10 times more network data to be transmitted over a standard fiber line. To learn more, I sat down with Helen Wong, director of Asia-Pacific products, Verizon, to discuss what this means for Verizon’s enterprise clients and their organizations.

What benefits does 100G technology offer Verizon’s enterprise customers and how does it help them improve their businesses?

From a very basic perspective, Verizon can now carry up to 10 times the amount of network traffic that is carried on a standard route. This technology means increased efficiencies by carrying traffic on a single 100G wavelength as opposed to the standard 10G wavelength. Another key benefit of a 100G backbone is scalability. Bandwidth can be adjusted rapidly to support customer demand for usage-based products such as Verizon’s Secure Cloud Interconnect.

Why the Asia-Pacific market and why now?

We’ve already deployed 20,000 miles of 100G technology on our U.S. network and 8,500 100G miles on our European network. This deployment expands into another region where bandwidth is also increasing. Like the U.S. and Europe, the Asia Pac region is seeing similar bandwidth growth patterns.

What vertical markets stand to benefit the most from 100G and what types of files or services are these industries running over the network that necessitates high speed connections?

With 100G, Verizon enterprise customers can move time-sensitive information more effectively between strategic business locations at faster speeds and at the bandwidth levels required for newer technologies, such as machine-to-machine solutions, that are transforming our customers’ global business infrastructures. While all clients benefit from the improved performance and increased capacity that 100G provides, clients that move time-sensitive information, such as banking, video distributors and financial trading firms will find value in our 100G deployment.

As will companies that transmit very large files over the network, including the medical field, retail and even the government. Think about the increased adoption of Internet of Things (IoT) solutions. IoT technologies carry large volumes of data from one point to another, and that adds up very quickly.

To keep up with customer demands, Verizon must deploy better and more efficient ways of carrying all that additional network traffic. That’s where 100G comes in.

Can you give me an example of technology solutions that best takes advantage of this technology?

We’re expanding our 100G network because of the growing demand for higher bandwidth that comes from core backbone capacity needed to stay ahead of drivers, such as over-the-top video, cloud services, 4G LTE mobile technology and collaboration services. 100G technology provides the necessary level of performance combined with the flexibility to meet and exceed our enterprise customers’ network traffic requirements.

Looking into the future, what kinds of technologies could 100G help provide the backbone for?

While we expect to see continued growth from cloud services, video and 4G LTE, technologies such as software-defined networking, virtualization, dev-ops, network intelligence and increased cybersecurity applications will also continue to impact the way we architect our network.
