UUNET, an MCI WorldCom Company announces major European and Transatlantic Internet bandwidth deployment
Transatlantic Bandwidth Due to Break the 1,000 Megabits per second Threshold by the End of 1998; European Network Bandwidth Increases Five-fold
LONDON, September 23, 1998-- UUNET, an MCI WorldCom Company, a global leader in Internet communications solutions, has announced the completion of the first stage of a major increase in Internet capacity ? both transatlantic and across Europe.
The company has deployed additional network infrastructure resulting in a more than ten-fold increase in US to UK capacity ? from 45 megabits per second (Mbps) last year to a total of up to 645 Mbps today. Transatlantic bandwidth is now due to break the 1,000 Mbps threshold by the end of this year. In the past six months, UUNET has increased its intra-European network capacity over seven-fold from 400 Mbps to almost 3,000 Mbps.
Says Pat Chapman-Pincher, UUNET senior vice president, International:
"This massive deployment in Europe is unprecedented and it signals our determination to continue to build the most reliable and widely deployed network in the world. It clearly demonstrates our continued commitment to ensuring that the Internet is a robust and truly international business communications tool."
Network Deployment Detail
The UUNET network now provides direct multi-megabit connections to London, Amsterdam, Brussels, Frankfurt, Monaco, Milan, Paris, Stockholm and Zurich. The core European network boasts interconnections at either one or multiple STM-1 (155 Mbps) capacity between Amsterdam, Brussels, Frankfurt, London and Paris and consists of a high density meshed topology where each city is connected to multiple others.
Future Deployment Plans
Plans for the future are ambitious. During the next three months the company plans to continue to deploy assets to increase its bandwidth in Europe by over 600 Mbps. Three more transatlantic STM-1s are planned by the end of the year.
Bandwidth in the Americas
In Canada, the company continues to distinguish itself as the only ISP with high-speed, east-west, Internet-only connections. From coast to coast, UUNET's backbone is a DS-3 (45 Mbps), with extra-high-speed OC-3c(155 Mbps) links in the highest traffic corridors. UUNET has also installed exceptional north-south connections to the U.S., including multiple DS-3 and OC-3c links; bringing the total north-south capacity up to more than 500 Mbps .
The U.S. backbone network consists of DS-3 and OC-12 trunks and has been reinforced with OC-12 (622 Mbps) ATM "metro rings" in 10 metropolitan multi-hub areas. These locations include Seattle, Los Angeles, Dallas, Houston, Chicago, Boston, Atlanta, New York City, Washington, D.C., and the San Francisco Bay area. The New York City, Washington, D.C., and San Francisco Bay areas have dual OC-12 rings.
