Think you have what it takes to be the best quiz writer on the internet?
Rachel McMahon went on BUILD series to tell her story of viral success and talk about her new book, “What Kind of Quiz Book Are You?”.
Although Rachel McMahon makes it look easy now, she wasn’t always just a natural at writing quizzes. Before she had a book deal, and before she had over 700 Buzzfeed quizzes under her belt, she was sitting in her high school yearbook class trying her hand at writing a quiz to distract herself from work she was supposed to be doing.
“My first quizzes were really terrible and I just showed them to my friends,” Rachel told the live audience at BUILD studios last week in NYC. “But as I started making more quizzes, I started to realize what did well, and what didn’t.”
When she logged on one day and saw that one of her quizzes had been promoted to the front page of Buzzfeed, she was hooked and knew she wanted to make more. “I loved knowing that there were people out there taking my quiz,” Rachel said.
Now, Rachel has turned her quiz-writing hobby into a quiz-writing career. She recently partnered with Verizon for the launch of the new Mix and Match wireless plans, and wrote a quiz that helps customers determine the perfect plan for them based on their personality.
She also just published her first book, “What Kind of Quiz Book Are You?” The book features some of Rachel’s most popular quizzes along with brand new ones, and additional commentary and breakdowns of quiz outcomes.
