On today’s edition of Up To Speed, we meet Jessica Lehman, an attorney within our Public Sector organization. Jessica lives in Springfield, VA, and has been with Verizon for about 18 months. In her current role, she is an attorney who deals with our subcontractors and partners.

“I wanted the Verizon job, of course, because the Verizon brand is such a valuable brand, and there’s so much power behind being part of that team,” Jessica said. “I could just tell that it was a really positive working culture, and it offered a long-term path to establishing myself as a lawyer.”

Jessica shared that being a mother is a core part of her identity, and being around other working parents who also have young families has been very beneficial. She also expressed her gratitude for the many resources that Verizon offers working parents.

“Just knowing that you’re not the only one going through it is really meaningful and makes a difference,” said Jessica. “Finding that balance and making sure my important work is getting done helps me be present for my children when I am off the clock and I am wearing my mom hat.”

Jessica also shared a recent victory — a prestigious recognition from The Association of Corporate Council, one of the premiere professional organizations for in-house attorneys. Through some research, she came across an opportunity to apply to be a top 10 30-Somethings 2023 corporate counsel.

“A lot of my essays focused on coming up with inventive solutions to be both a working mom and an attorney and just having that frank conversation about the ways that I’m doing it all and squeezing it all in.”

Three months after applying, she received the news that she had been selected as a top 10 corporate council; hundreds and hundreds of applicants applied worldwide, and Jessica was elated to be among the top 10.

“I was so proud to say that I came from Verizon,” said Jessica. “I could just tell the weight that the Verizon name carried, and their reputation gave me a place at the table.”
