As Verizon continues to drive the adoption of new communications technology in healthcare, the need for secure health information data (and accessing health information) is paramount. There’s a growing concern amongst providers, payers and healthcare organizations with identity theft. Not only does identity theft cost the industry millions but it can also stifle the adoption and use of new technologies. The healthcare ecosystem, driven by uncertainty and ambiguity, can forgo using newer [and better] technologies because of the complexity associated with identity authentication. In short, if healthcare users need to go through hoops to authenticate themselves across different applications multiple times a day, they’ll resort to ‘work-around’ solutions [such as writing down username and passwords on pieces of paper, in spreadsheets which are stored locally on computers, etc…] and often these ‘work around’ solutions may not adhere to security standards or worse lead to actual identity or data breaches.
If you look at most people’s online behavior, you see that many revert to high risk and vulnerable behaviors such as jotting down user names and passwords on pieces of paper or storing their credentials locally on their computers, or worse, using easily ‘hackable’ passwords such as “Password” or “Password123”. Doctors, nurses and caretakers are human after all and we can expect that this type of behavior exists in the healthcare space.
A simple solution is needed.
