BARNSTABLE, Mass. - Verizon customers in the Barnstable area now have improved communications as the result of a $3.2 million dollar investment the company has made in its call-switching center here.
Verizon recently increased the size of its Barnstable facility to make room for new switching equipment, new power systems and other equipment, including the upgrade of fire detection systems and heating and air conditioning equipment that will increase the capacity and reliability of the Verizon telecommunications network.
The power equipment supports high-speed, high-capacity services for business and DSL (digital subscriber line) high-speed Internet service. The power systems provide continued telecommunications services in the event of a commercial power disruption and allow Verizon technicians to more efficiently monitor and diagnose network power problems.
The Town of Barnstable is part of Cape Cod's Old King's Highway Historic District, and Verizon worked closely with local officials to ensure that the building addition conformed to the physical character of the neighborhood. For example, Verizon added a new, red brick facade to the Barnstable center, which will remain unpainted based on the wishes of residents.
During the past three years, Verizon has invested more than $2 billion in its network that serves Massachusetts.
"This project demonstrates Verizon's commitment to build and maintain an advanced telecommunications network throughout the Bay State," said Donna Cupelo, region president Verizon Massachusetts/Rhode Island. "We continue to invest in our state-of-the-art infrastructure to maintain service excellence, as well to provide a platform for high-speed access to the Internet, work-at-home capabilities and a host of other advanced services."
"Whether we're making significant network upgrades or offering new services and packages of local, long-distance and broadband services, Verizon is helping consumers and businesses make progress every day," said Cupelo.
