NEW YORK -- Citing his engineering achievements, the Chinese Institute of Engineers/USA has named Verizon's Dr. Stephen Liu an Engineer of the Year.

Liu, a member of the technical staff of Verizon Laboratories, was one of 15 individuals honored last week at the Asian-American Engineer of the Year Awards Banquet in Dallas.

The institute, a nonprofit organization that encourages the exchange of information among Chinese engineers and scientists, presents the award to individuals who have made significant contributions to their companies, professional organizations and communities.

"This award recognizes Steve as one of the top engineers in the United States," said Mark Wegleitner, Verizon senior vice president -- Technology. "It is well deserved."

A 22-year telecommunications veteran, Liu designs and evaluates fiber-optic network systems at the company's Waltham, Mass., research laboratory. His expertise enables Verizon to better serve customers by significantly increasing the provisioning speed and volume of video, voice traffic and computer data transmitted over Verizon's fiber-optic network.

Liu has published work in several national and international journals and papers, holds four patents and co-authored a book on high-speed data transmission technology.

Liu earned a bachelor's degree in electrical engineering from National Cheng-Kung University in Taiwan, and his master's degree and doctorate in electrical engineering from the Georgia Institute of Technology in Atlanta.

Liu and his wife Lily live in Acton, Mass., and have two sons.

Verizon Laboratories, part of the Verizon Technology organization, designs, develops and evaluates new technology for use in the company's network.
