GTE names Thomas W. White and Armen Der Marderosian to senior positions for its new world headquarters staff organization.

STAMFORD, Conn. -- GTE Corp. named Thomas W. White senior executive vice president - market operations and Armen Der Marderosian
executive vice president - technology and systems in its new world headquarters staff organization.

The appointments, which are effective immediately, follow GTEs April 25 announcement that it will integrate certain corporate and operating-unit
staffs and relocate its world headquarters from Stamford to the greater-Dallas area, where it already has more than 9,000 employees.

White, 51, will coordinate all of GTEs domestic businesses, including the activities of GTEs restructured Telephone Operations organization, which
now includes both regulated local-exchange operations and a new national sales, services and marketing unit. In addition, he will oversee the
Technology and Systems group, including GTE Government Systems and GTE Laboratories. He reports to GTE President Kent B. Foster, and is a
member of the Executive Leadership Committee, a small group of senior executives that works closely with GTEs Office of the Chairman in
identifying and addressing key strategic issues. He is based in Dallas.

Der Marderosian, 59, is responsible for technology throughout GTE and the assurance of quality and interoperability of new and existing systems
companywide. He also directs the ongoing activities of the Technology and Systems group. Der Marderosian reports to White and is a member of the
Executive Leadership Committee. He will be based in Dallas.

Background on White

White most recently served as president of GTE Telephone Operations from July 1995 to May 1997. Previously, he was executive vice president -
network operations for GTE Telephone Operations from 1994 to 1995 and executive vice president - GTE Telephone Operations from 1991 to
1994.

He began his GTE career in 1968 as a staff assistant in accounting with General Telephone Company of Wisconsin and served in positions of
increasing responsibility in business planning, operations, regulatory affairs, business development and product management.

White, who is a resident of Southlake, Texas, serves on the Board of Directors for BC TEL and the United Way of Metropolitan Dallas, and is a
member of the Dallas Citizens Council. He received a bachelor's degree in accounting from the University of Wisconsin at Oshkosh, Wis.

Background on Der Marderosian

Der Marderosian previously served as senior vice president - technology and systems from July 1995. Prior to that, he was executive vice president -
Government Sector for GTE Government Systems from February 1993 to July 1995.

He began his GTE career in 1963, holding positions of increasing responsibility until 1974, when he was selected as a Sloan Fellow to attend the
Massachusetts Institute of Technology, where he received a master's degree in management. Upon his return in 1975, he assumed responsibility for
international business development, and in 1977, he was appointed vice president and general manager of Sylvania Technical Systems. In 1979, he
became vice president and general manager of GTE Iran, and in 1980, he assumed the additional responsibility of assistant general manager of the
Communication Systems Division.

Der Marderosian holds a bachelors degree from Suffolk University in Boston, Mass., and a juris doctorate degree from Suffolk Law School. He is a
member of the Massachusetts Bar. Der Marderosian serves on the Board of Directors of URS Corporation. He and his wife, Ann, currently reside in
Massachusetts.
