IRVING, Texas - GTE Long Distance today announced it has reached the three million-customer milestone in nationwide and international long-distance service. This marks the third consecutive year that GTE has increased its customer base by one million since entering the long-distance business in March 1996.

"Our rapid growth of customers comes as a result of the competitive atmosphere of choice created by the Telecommunications Act of 1996," said Pam Jacobson, president of GTE Long Distance. "Putting it into perspective, three million customers is a population roughly the size of Dallas. Our easy-to-use and understand products, competitive prices and excellent customer service are the foundation for our continued growth and success."

Some of GTE Long Distance's service is part of a consumer "bundle" that includes local and long distance telephone service, as well as calling features like caller ID and call waiting. Customers can add Internet access, paging, and wireless telephone service to their bundles as well.

GTE has rolled out a series of long-distance calling plans designed to reflect particular calling habits.

GTE Smart Saver offers state-to-state calls made at any time of day for 10-cents-a-minute, and in-state rates that range from eight to 14-cents a minute. In addition to GTE Smart Saver, other GTE long-distance calling plans include GTE Total Call, GTE Easy Savings Plan, and GTE Talk to the World.

More information on GTE's long-distance calling plans can be found at www.gte.com or by calling 1-800-GTE-3737.
