Career development is important to both candidates seeking their next career move and those employees looking for career development. What’s key for career success is to own your destiny and look for those opportunities when presented. Below are two testimonials that are good examples of owning your career to achieve success.

Jacob S., Solutions Manager

In November 2017, Jacob walked into one of our Retail stores for  a phone upgrade, and left with the possibility of a new career. General Manager Shelby Cavanaugh spoke to Jacob about employment at Verizon, and the benefits offered to military veterans like himself. Jacob started as a Solutions Specialist the following month, where he launched his career. He quickly made his mark and received recognition as a  Top Solutions Specialist in his market , and his contributions helped his store consistently become number one many times over. Due to his hard work and skills learned during his military service, Jacob was selected to attend two events that rewarded his sales efforts and leadership: Winner’s Circle and the 2018 President’s Cabinet in Madrid, Spain. “All of these successes led to our store becoming number one in the market year over year.” said Jacob.

Jacob served as an active duty marine for four years with  two deployments. He states, “The military has instilled the lessons of being fair, firm, and consistent when it comes to leadership.” The opportunities for growth  he received from Verizon have enabled him to utilize these skills and succeed time and again. Part of what drives Jacob to stay motivated on the job is the recognition and resources Verizon provides to military veterans.  Verizon understands the value a military experience brings to the company, something Jacob says makes him feel “appreciated and valued.” With the support of his leadership team and the work ethic necessary to succeed, Jacob now serves as a  Solutions Manager in our Coralville, Iowa location, currently ranked number one in its territory.

It is nice to be able to say I work for a company that appreciates me and values me as an employee for my past, present, and future. It makes being an advocate for Verizon very easy!

Victoria D., Recruiter

Upon starting at Verizon in 2011, Victoria had no idea her job would soon morph into a career. She came to Verizon as a customer service representative, hoping to one day get back to her management roots. By working her way through several departments throughout customer care,  she used those skills to become a recruiter to help attract other great talent to Verizon. Using the leadership skills from her prior roles, Victoria was ready to thrive in a career outside of her comfort zone. She states, “Through the interim assignment, I had found another career path that I wanted to pursue. When an opening presented itself, I was ready. I built relationships with people outside of my location, learned how to manage projects and developed skills to communicate more efficiently and effectively."

The possibilities are truly endless at Verizon. Career growth is something that is available to anyone who wants it.

Victoria D.

In 2017, Victoria became a full time V teamer on the Talent Acquisition recruitment team, primarily supporting call center home based agent hiring. Victoria has shared her experiences at job fairs and community events, sharing, “Development is something that leadership values and provides to employees consistently. This supportive environment is what makes Verizon stand out above the rest.” Making a positive  impact on others, guiding professionals on their career paths, and exposure to supportive leadership teams are what Victoria cites as the best parts of her job.
