From connected cars to fleet management, telematics and connected machine technologies are transforming industries and creating new consumer experiences.

As digital technologies and communications are reshaping industries, including media, consumer electronics and retail distribution, the infusion of telematics and machine-to-machine (M2M) technologies into the automotive and transportation sectors also is transforming those areas.

In the midst this transformation, last year Verizon bolstered its presence with the acquisition of Hughes Telematics, a leading provider of telematics, machine-to-machine and fleet management services.

What does the future hold for telematics? Key issues and opportunities will be explored April 21-24, at the Intelligent Transportation Society of America’s (ITS America) 23rd Annual Meeting and Exposition at the Gaylord Opryland Resort and Convention Center in Nashville, TN. An estimated 2,000 transportation and high-tech leaders from across the United States are expected to attend the event.

On April 22, Tom Taylor, vice president, Advanced Strategies with Hughes Telematics, will participate in a roundtable discussion on the “Future of Telematics.’’ The session will focus on vehicle telematics and the transformation currently underway in the industry.

“I look forward to sharing ideas on mobility and modernizing the nation’s infrastructure with some of the leaders in the transportation industry from public agencies, private industry and academia,” Taylor said. “If you look around, cars are becomingly increasingly high tech with consumers using everything from Web-based navigation services to accessing localized and personalized information in their vehicles. Whether it’s helping to enable smarter and more responsible drivers or helping businesses manage their rolling fleets more effectively, Verizon is playing a central role in the telematics evolution.’’

According to a Gartner report, The Internet of Things is here and expected to grow to more than 30 billion connected machines, buildings, sensors and objects generating vast amounts of data to be turned into intelligence that can make the world safer and more efficient.

By combining the Hughes Telematics platform with Verizon’s global network and cloud capabilities, Verizon is positioned to deliver cloud-based services – including video – to the car along with solutions for health care or home automation.
