Why Congress needs to make more commercial spectrum available
FWA technology is a wireless service that relies on licensed spectrum. Unfortunately, the limited availability of licensed spectrum, coupled with the lack of incoming new spectrum auctions, hinders the growth of FWA and mobile wireless connectivity and capacity. To keep up with consumer demand for FWA, and to continue to bring real broadband competition to cable, the wireless industry needs more licensed spectrum.
Unlicensed and licensed spectrum have features that make each useful for specific use cases. For example, every Verizon customer uses unlicensed spectrum to power Bluetooth and WiFi. However unlicensed spectrum cannot offer stable and consistent capacity; only licensed spectrum can guarantee capacity, which is essential to fixed wireless broadband.
Shared spectrum has a similar problem. When federal users share spectrum, they have the power to preempt commercial operations. That’s a poor solution for a wireless home broadband service that is used to support telehealth, remote work, and other critical operations.
Congress needs to restore the FCC’s auction authority and establish the next mid-band high-power licensed spectrum pipeline to ensure that the FWA can continue to meet consumer demand for reliable, affordable home broadband and provide a competitive alternative to cable.
